December 9, 2007
As 2007 draws to close, I look forward to a new year! Hopefully a much better year! 2007 was the first year of the Stevie Norman Blues Band and it did not turn out like I had planned or wanted it to!
I took about six months to find a good drummer that fit in and could dedicate or at least semi- dedicate himself to the band! We found our current drummer Sam Pulley, by accident! We had another drummer (Kevin Hall) scheduled to play a gig last summer, and at the last minute his doctor told him he had to take at least three days off. Kevin hooked us up with Sam! He showed up and kicked ass that night with no rehearsal or any idea what songs we would be performing! Thanks Sam!
My original concept for the band was to have a keyboard player join and give us a much fuller sound. In Austin, good keyboard players are hard to find! We played some gigs with a borrowed keyboard player and another guy who didn't really mesh with us! We also played quite a few gigs with Mark Goodwin, a really great player and singer! Mark is the guy we were looking for, but he does his own thing most of the time, and is not interested in rehearsing whatsoever! He plays great at the gigs, but there is no chance of working out any really cool stuff! So I have pretty much given up on the keyboard player for now!
I also wanted to record an album this year, but that just didn't happen either! With the personnel problems and my own personal financial problems, that is on the back burner! Also, getting rehearsals together this year was like pulling teeth! I had many rehearsals cancelled for really stupid reasons! I became very frustrated and gave up after a while! I wanted as many original songs as possible on the CD, and you just have to work that stuff out! Once I get things back on track for this recording project, I'll do whatever I have to do to make these rehearsals happen!
Speaking of personal financial problems, since about August I have been lookng around for other sidemen gigs for myself just to make some money! I went out for a week with a Lubbock band to Farmington, New Mexico! That turned out to be a living hell! I checked out many other bands and did not really find what I was looking for.
I did, however, find a gig locally that pays well and seems to be fun so far. The only thing is that I have been hired to play acoustic rhythm guitar, and my thing is electric lead guitar! I have had fun with it so far because I am also singing back up harmonies for the guy and the music is about 90% original! The guy's name is Gabe Nieto, and he calls his music "country-achi!" He's got some well crafted songs and top notch production on his recordings! I am assuming that I will move over to lead guitar eventually, but as long as it continues to pay well, I'll hang in there! We'll see what happens!
In 2007 I lost my best friend, Toro. He was a Border Collie that I had raised from a six week old "ball of fur"! He was almost 15 years old when he got so sick that we had to put him to sleep. I wrote a blog about him on our mySpace page. I still miss the old guy!
That's it for now, but check back again for more news as it happens! As long as your here, sign the guest book!
Thanks, Stevie Norman.
